The Silverado Community Association (SCA) is working to provide a free outdoor public skating rink for the benefit of the residents of Silverado and surrounding communities. We have many young families that will benefit and it will create a community that is healthy. It also gives our young people a positive activity during the dormant winter months. Our diverse ethnic community will benefit from a recreational area that we can call our own.
The SCA plans to raise funds for the construction of a permanent outdoor rink facility on the lands located southwest of Silverado Blvd at Silverado Dr. We are currently raising funds from SCA memberships, relevant charitable grants as they become available, and the generous support of individuals and businesses. The development of plans and funding required for the permanent facility will be an ongoing priority for the SCA over the next few years.
In the short term the SCA will apply to the City of Calgary Adopt-a-Rink program, which will allow for the placement of a temporary pleasure skating rink site in time for the 2015-2016 winter season. Normally these temporary rinks cost around $15,000 or more the first year and around $3000-4000 in following years until the permanent site is completed. The first year expenses include initial site preparation and costs for water to maintain the ice surface. Above these costs, approximately 200 hours of volunteer time will be lined up to assist with maintenance through the season.
Silverado has been fortunate enough to have some generous partners step up this fall to make an Adopt-a-Rink possible.
First, the City of Calgary Parks department generously provided the contractor who has built up the flat space for the rink site next to the community garden (you may have noticed them working hard on this through October-November).
Second, Cordy Environmental Inc. has generously offered to provide the water trucks to flood and maintain the ice surface through the 2015-2016 season. This means that the funds raised so far through support from local businesses and individuals can be put to use on the permanent facilities planned for the site.
The SCA appreciates the support from all of you to date, and would appreciate your continued partnership with the SCA toward an outdoor recreation facility in Silverado.
Stay tuned for more information as the project continues!
